In this song, "Emmylou" is a metaphoric "state of mind" where I, as a young lad working the badlands for the USGS, dreamt of the finer things of a life yet to come.
I wrote the song after listening to Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris sing Grievous Angel, which we soon incorporated into our live set.
After playing the song live several times, my harmonica player was so incensed about my lack of "spiritual fidelity" he called my wife to ask her if she knew I was singing a song wherein I openly confessed my deep abiding love for another woman. Shortly thereafter, he left the band.
Ahh, folks, it's just a state of mind.
But as I now look back on the 18 year old boy looking forward from 1971, Emmy and Graham were a big part of my youthful hippie vison and naiveté..."And I saw my devil, and I saw my deep blue sea. And I thought about a calico bonnet from Cheyenne to Tennessee" (Gram Parsons).
